When to Plant Tuberose Bulbs
Plant your Tuberose Bulbs in the Spring, after danger of the last frost has passed. Mexican Tuberose thrives in hot, sunny climates so it can’t tolerate frost. Once winter is over and early spring begins in your area/hardiness zone, the tuberose bulbs should be planted.
Where To Plant Tuberose Bulbs
Plant bulbs in rich sandy soil, full sun, and a well-drained location. If the soil doesn’t drain well, you can amend it with organic material like compost.
How to Plant Tuberose Bulbs
Space bulbs 6 to 8 inches apart and cover with an inch or two of soil. We do not plant our bulbs very deep in the ground.
How to Grow Tuberose Bulbs
Give your bulbs/plants water every 7 to 10 days. Mature bulbs (7-9cm and larger in size) will bloom in about 3 to 4 months (July- Sept.) While smaller bulbs will bloom for you the second growing season. Keep the soil consistently moist before and during the period of bloom that occurs in late summer. Enrich poor soil with compost and organic amendments to increase drainage and texture for the best show of tuberose flowers. Best results of blooms come from the cultivar Mexican Single, which is highly fragrant.
Don’t cut your foliage off at the end of the season - let it yellow so the plant can still receive nutrients.
Digging Up Tuberose Bulbs
In the early fall season you can dig the bulbs up and store them for the winter. We wait until after the first frost has killed back the foliage. After drying them out in the sun, cut back some of the leaves/stems from the bulbs and knock off any remaining dirt. Please DO NOT let the bulbs get wet after the drying out process. Once dried out place in a warm/cool/dark area at around 45 to 55 degrees.
*DO NOT LET THE BULBS FREEZE*
We do suggest that you dig your bulbs up every 3 to 4 years and Split your bulbs apart and plant back the largest bulbs for blooms.
Overwintering Tuberose Bulbs
In zones 6-10 cover over your bulbs with 4”-6″ or more of mulch, straw, or leaves.
In zones 5-3 (cold and harsh winters) please dig up your bulbs and follow the information provided in the bulb digging guide.
Storing Tuberose Bulbs
Tuberose Bulbs can be stored during the winter at temperatures of 70 to 75 degrees F. (21-24 C.) They may also be air dried for seven to ten days and stored in a cool location at 50 degrees F. (10 C.) for replanting next spring. Experiment with storage options when learning how to grow tuberose, using the option which is most convenient for you.
