Ready to Grow Dahlias Yourself?
We have cultivated an excellent selection of Dahlia varieties
Dahlia Growing Basics:
• The tubers should be planted in full sun and well-drained soil
• Make sure you do not over water dahlias after they are planted. They need very little water until the plants are at least 8”-12” tall.
• As dahlias grow it is best to stake them so they do not fall over in the wind.
• The best way to extend the vase life of dahlia flowers is to make sure you keep them in clean water.
• In the fall, after the plants die back, you can dig up the dahlia’s tubers to store them for another year.
Where To Plant
Dahlias thrive in full sun (8 hours minimum) but a little afternoon shade can help with the heat in southern climates. Dahlias are heavy feeders and like soil with lots of organic matter. Dahlia tubers can rot easily if planted in a space that has poor drainage. We plant in raised beds or hilled rows on the farm.
Planting Dahlias
Wait to plant your Dahlias until after the threat of frost. It can take anywhere from 2-6 weeks for sprouts to emerge out of the ground after planting. We plant our dahlia tubers on their side with the eyes facing up, about 4 to 6 inches deep, and cover with soil. We space dahlias at 10” to 12" apart
Watering Dahlias
After planting, wait to water until you see the first shoots emerge out of the ground. Young dahlia plants do not require much water. Once your dahlia plants are established (12"-18” tall), water regularly and deeply. Try to make sure your dahlias receive 1” of water every week. In the heat of summer, dahlias will require more water especially if it is warm and dry.
Harvesting Dahlias
The best time to cut dahlias is in the cool of the morning. Using sharp pruners, cut the stem at a 45 degree angle. Unlike many other flowers, dahlias will not continue to open much after picked, so harvest them right before they are fully open. Replace the water and recut stems daily for a vase life of 3-5 days (vase life of dahlias varies depending on variety and size). Harvest dahlias regularly to promote additional flowering.
